Ariel Sharon – 1928-2014
Ariel Sharon, one of Israel’s greatest military commanders and former Prime Minister, was buried January 13th, in a plot at the Sycamore Ranch he owned close to Gaza. He was 85. While Israel mourns the death of this great and controversial man, many also reflect on the fact that he essentially died eight years ago when he suffered a stroke that left him in a coma, a vegetative state so profound he was unable to move, recognize loved ones or communicate. Without life-sustaining intervention, Mr. Sharon essentially died eight years ago. If his kidneys had not ultimately failed, he would still be trapped in the coma. We mourn for the loss to his country and for his family and the heartache they have had to endure for such a long time.
